About

Precious Chiebonam Nnebedum is a Nigerian-Austrian poet, author and performer based in London.

Precious standing against an old stone wall

Raised between Nigeria and Austria, she has spent much of her life moving between places, languages and ways of belonging. That movement, and the questions it leaves behind, continues to shape her work.

“Belonging can be both a comfort and a question.”

Her writing explores memory, faith, family, migration, Black identity, womanhood and home. She is drawn to the places where the personal becomes political, where inherited stories meet the lives we choose for ourselves, and where belonging can be both a comfort and a question.

Precious writes and performs in English, German and D-English, with occasional Igbo woven through her work. Her poetry moves between page and stage, intimacy and performance, tenderness and confrontation. Her practice has grown from spoken word and poetry slam into a wider literary and performative practice encompassing books, readings, exhibitions, cultural events and community work.

Her debut poetry collection, birthmarks, was published by Haymon Verlag in 2022. Her second collection, hungry waters, follows in 2026. Her work has been presented internationally across Europe, Brazil and beyond, and she has performed at literary festivals, museums, theatres and cultural institutions.

Her work has received the Exil Literary Award (2020), the Elisabeth Seidl Award (2021), the Grant for Innovative Writing Techniques from the Province of Styria (2022) and the Josef Krainer Award for Performance Art (2023). She is also a recipient of the UK Global Talent visa in Arts and Culture as a writer.

Alongside her literary work, Precious is a co-founder of TANAKA Graz, an initiative created to centre Black youth, migrants and creative communities. TANAKA was awarded the Graz Women’s Award in 2021. Her wider artistic practice has also included exhibitions and collaborations with institutions including Graz Museum and Kunsthaus Graz.

In 2025, Precious became a patron of black print – Festival für Schwarze Perspektiven, a literary festival in Innsbruck dedicated to presenting and celebrating Black perspectives from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The festival returned in 2026, bringing together readings, conversations, poetry and performance and creating space for both established and emerging Black voices.

Her work is rooted in storytelling: in the stories we inherit, the ones we carry across borders, and the ones we create as we become.
